LPA vs Annual vs Hourly
Different countries quote salaries differently:
India: LPA (Lakhs Per Annum) or CTC - "15 LPA" = ₹15,00,000/year
USA: Annual salary or hourly rate - "$80K" = $80,000/year - "$50/hour" = ~$104,000/year (2080 hours)
UK: Annual salary - "£45K" = £45,000/year
UAE/Gulf: Monthly salary - "AED 20,000/month" = AED 240,000/year
Conversion trick: To go from monthly to annual, multiply by 12. To go from annual to monthly, divide by 12.
CTC vs Take-Home in India
Indian packages are quoted as CTC, but take-home is different:
Typical CTC Breakdown: - Basic: 40-50% - HRA: 20-25% - Special Allowance: 15-20% - PF (employer): 12% - Other: Variable
Example (₹20 LPA CTC): - Gross monthly: ₹1,66,667 - After PF, tax: ~₹1,20,000 - Take-home: ~₹14.4 lakhs/year (72% of CTC)
When comparing to foreign offers, compare take-home to take-home!
Negotiation Language
How to sound confident in negotiations:
If you're used to lakhs/crores but negotiating in USD: - Don't say: "I want... um... that's about 1.5 crores, right?" - Do say: "I'm targeting $180,000 base with equity."
If you're used to USD but negotiating in India: - Don't say: "So that's like... 0.6 million or something?" - Do say: "I'm looking at 50 lakhs CTC with standard benefits."
Pro tip: Always do conversions before the call. Never do mental math live—it shows uncertainty.
Comparing International Offers
When you have offers from multiple countries, normalize them:
Create a comparison table:
| Factor | India (₹) | USA ($) | UAE (AED) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base | 25L | 120K | 25K/mo |
| Bonus | 2L | 20K | 2 mo |
| Equity | 5L | 40K | - |
| Total | 32L | 180K | 27K/mo |
| Tax | 30% | 35% | 0% |
| Net | 22.4L | 117K | 27K/mo |
| In INR | ₹22.4L | ₹97L | ₹72L |
Now you can actually compare apples to apples.
