Why Indian Gold Costs More Than the Global Price
If you convert the Indian price per ounce into dollars, it usually comes out above the international spot price. That gap is mostly import duty and GST, plus local premiums. Jewellery adds making charges on top. So when comparing gold prices between Dubai, the US and India, compare like with like: 24K bullion to 24K bullion, with taxes stated.
22K vs 24K
- 24K is 99.9% pure and used for coins and bars.
- 22K is 91.6% pure and used for most jewellery. It is priced lower per gram, about 92% of the 24K rate.
- 18K is 75% pure.
Buying Gold From Abroad
NRIs often compare Gulf gold prices with Indian ones before a trip home. Convert the dirham or riyal price per gram to rupees, then check India's customs allowance for gold carried in before assuming it is cheaper.
