How Many People Report Over ₹1 Crore
Reports on income-tax data for assessment year 2025-26 put the number of people declaring more than ₹1 crore of income at roughly 4 to 5.4 lakh (400,000 to 540,000), depending on the dataset and whether all taxpayers or only individuals are counted. Either way, it is well under 1% of the roughly 8 crore people who file returns.
The number declaring more than ₹100 crore was reported at 576, up 39% in a year.
Income Crorepati vs Wealth Crorepati
- Income crorepati: earns ₹1 crore or more in a year. Rare.
- Wealth crorepati: owns ₹1 crore or more in assets, such as a home in a big city plus savings. Much more common, because property prices in Indian metros regularly cross ₹1 crore.
When someone says "crorepati", ask which one they mean.

Where Does ₹1 Crore Rank?
India uses the crore as a psychological milestone, just as the US uses "six figures" or "a million". Roughly: ₹1 crore of income ≈ a six-figure US salary, and ₹10 crore of wealth ≈ a US dollar millionaire.
